Along with our usual reading, writing, and arithmetic studies we have been “rowing” the book Owl Moon and studying about owls. The kids are finishing up their mini books about owls and have learned that owls are nocturnal, and that they eat insects, small birds and mice. They’ve also learned that the owls’ claws are called talons and that they use these talons to swoop down from trees and grab up their prey. Since they do this, they are called raptors. Another important thing they’ve discovered is that owls are carnivores – meaning that they are meat eaters. We took a nature tour on my iPad app, Naturetap, of some different species of owls complete with the sounds they make and very helpful information about where they live and migrate. I used this app in place of the bedtime story last night and they really enjoyed it.

Tomorrow will be our fun day. I plan on them doing a mixed media owl craft and we will be baking owl cupcakes for dessert. I’ll be sure to post pictures tomorrow evening! Here are the links for these crafts:
